Say Aloha to Camryn!

Who is Camryn?

Ten-year-old Camryn is an adventurer at heart. She spends her time loving gymnastics, searching for critters, swimming, and thinking of exploring the world. When dreaming of her wish, Camryn imagines luscious waterfalls, luaus, glimmering waves, and tall palm trees. Camryn’s wish? To swim alongside dolphins and snorkel to uncover the beautiful waters of Hawaii.

With her wish on the horizon, Camryn continues treatment for Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a rare blood cancer disorder. Last year, during a doctor’s appointment for a regular check-up, Camryn’s doctor ran blood tests after Camryn’s mom, Kimberly, told the doctor she had concerns about Camryn’s eating habits and about some bruises she found on Camryn’s body. The results of the blood test were in the next day and…Camryn had cancer.

Camryn’s mother recalls the moment, “I remember falling to the floor crying, my co-workers surrounding me. It was as if time stood still.” Camryn was admitted to the hospital that day. “As the doctors told me what was going on, I had a false sense that in a few months she would be cured.”
Starting treatment in Houston immediately at Texas Children’s Hospital, Camryn traveled 150 miles up to three times a week for four months. During this time, Camryn received weekly blood and platelet transfusions, began intensive chemotherapy, and underwent a bone marrow transplant. Camryn remained in the hospital for nearly three months. Post-transplant, Camryn and her doctor had appointments every other day with immune-suppressive therapy for eight months. Now, Camryn has biweekly visits to monitor any possible complications post-transplant.

Her mother tells us, “it’s been rough for her to feel like she will fit back into being a kid again,” Kimberly continues, “she gets so nervous every time she sneezes or coughs…she knows her body can’t fight the way it used to.” Kimberly looks forward to the upcoming adventure, “what we’ll see, what we’ll do when we get there. It’s the one thing we can all focus on when things aren’t so great.”

Excited beyond belief and constantly buzzing about her trip, Camryn is looking forward to the day when she can board the plane in Austin and land in paradise. Camryn is a brave young girl who has faced unfathomable challenges. She remains focused on healing, experiencing the full wonders of childhood, and celebrating with her family in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
